Opening Night Productions is a different kind of community theatre. It’s different because, when you walk into the theatre, you will see something new, something you’ve never seen before. Every Opening Night Production is a world premiere that has never been done before.

Opening Night Productions was created to give Maryland playwrights, especially Southern Maryland playwrights, the chance to be heard. Emerging playwrights have a very difficult time getting their plays produced. While all playwrights face that problem, when both the play and its author are unknown, those are two additional hurdles to be overcome before the play ever sees an opening night.

Opening Night Productions eliminates those two hurdles because ALL our productions are plays that have never been produced before.

Our first two productions, both for 2024, are Blue Mermaid, by Baltimore playwright Mark Scharf, and The Stage Is a World, by Calvert County playwright Richard Thompson.

Our productions are performed at the 80-seat Indian Head Black Box Theatre in Indian Head, MD. As the name “Black Box” implies, our productions use minimal, easily-changed scenery — but they are full productions with full rehearsal schedules.

COME JOIN US. Opening Night Productions is always open to new actors, directors, designers, tech people — in short, anyone interested in bulding their theatrical skills. No play goes onstage by itself. All theatre is a collaboration among playwright, director, actors, designers and more. Come and collaborate with us!

COME SEE US. The most important collaborator in theatre is the audience. Every audience is different, which is why no play is the same every night.

Opening Night Productions puts out a call for plays in June/July of each year. While Opening Night Productions is aimed primarily at Maryland, particularly Southern Maryland, playwrights, Opening Night Productions will consider submissions from outside Maryland.
